He was already studying the fish.
Jung reports: on the morning of 1 April 1949 he noted an inscription, a figure half man, half fish. There was fish for lunch. Someone mentioned the custom of making an April fish of someone. That afternoon a former patient, not seen for months, showed embroidered fish. In the evening someone mentioned a dream of a large fish. He had, he says, been occupied with the fish symbol.
