English · dream

dream

An image that arrives without being asked, and does not owe us a translation.

Etymology

Old English drēam once meant joy, music, revelry; the sleep-vision sense is later and tangled. Do not rest a theory on the folk history.

Semantic range

REM and NREM, memory incorporation, affect, recall, Jungian amplification, comparative dream cultures. No single settled theory.

What the gloss loses

Dream dictionaries. Ancient manuals, religious dreams, psychoanalytic dreams, and neuroscientific dreams are not one method.

Misuse

‘Your dream means…’ The dreamer’s association comes before the dictionary.
