A first stamp. Later, a word that became a personality category.

Etymology

Greek arkhetypon: original pattern, stamp. Jung’s usage changed across decades. Image and archetype are not the same. The collective unconscious is a theory, not a catalog of character types.1

Semantic range

Recurrence at the level of image, narrative structure, association, cultural inheritance, interpretation. Ask which level.2

What the gloss loses

Online ‘archetypes’ as branding (the Lover, the Magician) are not Jung, and not Hillman.

Misuse

Certifying universal meanings. Flattening culturally distinct figures into one card.
